Edition Notes

Holograph, signed with initials.

Deborah Weston informs Emma Weston that "all here are full of the meeting on Monday ..." Deborah said: "Get Wendell [Phillips] to come if you can. ...Get everybody to come that you can." Deborah thinks that Charles L. Remond "acted like a fool out here, calling people right & left rascals and scoundrels, & attacking people not so much on account of the donation party, but for having it the night he lectured, when the whole thing was arranged before they knew he was coming." Deborah hopes that the Hutchinson [singers] can come, as a place will be provided for them to stay. She gives family and local news. Deborah asked: "Did you see that notice of Mrs. [Lydia Maria] Child in the Courier--I should think she would blush all over."

There was a circular signed by Mrs. Lydia Maria Child and J.S. Gibbons regretting the construction of Liberator articles as committing the American Anti-Slavery Society in favor of dissolution of the Union. Compare with William Lloyd Garrison's letter of July 23, 1840, Call No. Ms.A.1.1 v.3, p.53, where he mentions secessionists from the old anti-slavery platform in Boston..
