Child begs admission to the Brook Farm community for Caroline (Henshaw) Colt, the widow of John C. Colt, and her child. Describes her as an "ignorant, worthy, affectionate German girl," and outlines the circumstances of her marriage to Colt.

See George Willis Cooke's book, John Sullivan Dwight : brook-farmer, editor, and critic of music : a biography; (1898). On page 76, there is a reference to Mrs. Colt in a letter from Dwight to Mrs. Child, Dec. 25, 1843.
