Edition Notes

Copy of letter; not William Lloyd Garrison's handwriting. Whereabouts of original manuscript unknown.

William Lloyd Garrison was not surprised to hear of George Thompson's death. When William L. Garrison saw him a year ago, he was in very poor health. He comments on the great change that has taken place in the attitude of the local newspapers toward George Thompson. Garrison discusses a dinner given in his honor by the New England Franklin Club. Garrison writes: "My connection with the printer's 'craft' is to me a source of unspeakable pride and delight; and it had everything to do with shaping my career, and literally putting into my hands the great instrumentalities for the final overthrow of the slave system." Garrison condemns President Hayes's policy in the South.
