Edition Notes

Holograph.

Caroline Weston was relieved to receive Mrs. Maria W. Chapman's letter, except for the news of her illness. Caroline exhorts her to take care of herself and give as much work as possible to others. The letter is concerned mainly with the preparations for the Boston anti-slavery fair. Caroline does not favor oil and instead believes "illumination should be made with candles." Caroline expects Hervey Weston to give up his room to her for the time of the fair; she says that "he can sleep somewhere else or be hung on a peg." She strongly favors greens to decorate the hall. She discusses details of the refreshment table. She tells Maria W. Chapman to "make all the Boston folks fetch their candlesticks as well as lamps--Hail Holy Lights--!!!"
