Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

Oliver Johnson explains his publishing a paragraph in the National Anti-Slavery Standard, which was taken from a letter sent to him by Harriet Martineau. He sends a note which came with Harriet Martineau's letter. He heard that Parker Pillsbury and Stephen S. Foster have become friends again.

On page three of the manuscript, there is a separate note in pencil written by Maria Weston Chapman. She says that H.M. [Harriet Martineau] paid no attention to a letter by Wendell Phillips; this letter was briefly referred to by Oliver Johnson on page two of this manuscript.
