Edition Notes
Signed by William Lloyd Garrison. Text of this circular letter is written in another hand.
Money is needed to pay the sculptor John A. Jackson to create a marble bust of Wendell Phillips. William Lloyd Garrison explains: "The artist's regular price, in such cases is $400---one hundred of which he generously contributes towards securing the marble semblance of so noble a man, leaving $300 to be raised by subscription. This sum it is proposed to solicit of a select number of Mr. P's friends, (of course, without his knowledge,) in such proportion as they may feel disposed to give, without taxing any one unduly." On pages two and three of this letter, there is a list of the friends who contributed, with the amount of their donation.
