Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

The top part of this letter was damaged and torn off, with several sentences missing from each page. The date, above the salutation, was torn off; on the verso, this letter was postmarked Providence, R.I., May 23.

William Lloyd Garrison discusses the loss of his sense of smell and tells of the medicines prescribed to him to cure catarrh. Garrison had an hour's intervew with Angelina E. Grimké. Garrison describes Grimké's host, William Jenkins, and his son and comments about them: "Soon after, his eldest son made his appearance, and strutted into the room as stiffly and loftily as a Lord Mayor with his official robes upon his precious carcass---not deigning to speak to Henry or myself, or mingling at all in the conversation. Deliver us from a Quaker coxcomb!" Garrison rejoices at the prospect of Henry E. Benson's recovery from illness.
