Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

On pages 1-2 of this manuscript, there is a letter from William Cooper Nell to Maria Weston Chapman. Nell presents a request from the Committee of the Adelphic Union [of colored people] that Mrs. Chapman deliver a lecture about the value and necessity of cultivating a taste for knowledge. Miss [Sarah M.?] Grimke previously lectured to the Adelphic Union.

On page 3 of this manuscript, there is a letter from Maria Weston Chapman to John Pierpont. For want of time, Maria W. Chapman has been unable to comply with Mr. William C. Nell's request to present a lecture. Chapman entreats John Pierpont "in behalf of these excellent persons" to deliver the desired lecture.
