Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

On pages 1-3 of this manuscript, there is a letter by Abby Kimber to Maria Weston Chapman, written on May 21, 1846. Abby Kimber thinks that the National Anti-Slavery Standard should be supported independently of subscribers, and be circulated gratis among "our most intelligent opponents." She suggest that "E. Quincy might curb his wit a little -- and S.H. Gay might be a little sparing of his epithets..." She feels that some of the "glorious articles" are lost among the abolitionists, "none of the political papers having the grace to copy them."

On pages 3-4 of this manuscript, there is a separate letter by Gertrude K. Burleigh [also known as Mrs. Charles Calistus Burleigh] to Maria Weston Chapman, written on May 22, 1846. Gertrude K. Burleigh reports that Robert Douglass wants Maria Weston to return his sketches that were entrusted to her. If they cannot be found, please give Douglass information about them. Robert Douglass also wants the return of a painting lent to William Lloyd Garrison. Gertrude K. Burleigh asks for the articles left over from the Dedham anti-slavery fair. She rejoices that Mary Grew will be with Maria Weston Chapman at the time of the convention. She quotes Charles [Calistus Burleigh?]'s praise of Mary Grew as a speaker.
