Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

In this letter, Augustus Hesse explains that "on account of Almira and Anna being here [and] in spending the time with me in glory & joyfulness I do all what I can to remain" in the hospital. He requests that his wife Almira be met upon her arrival in North Braintree by "our old true Horse I use[d] to drive." Hesse received 4 months of pay by accident, instead of the 6 months of pay owed to him.

In the postscript, Augustus Hesse promises to write his next letter to the doctor [Hervey Weston]. Hesse says: "I shall give him the knowle[d]ge of my comfort here in Philadelphia the splendid old good Wine I drink now to make me strong to be ready to fight the Rebels."
