William Lloyd Garrison writes: "Apparently, the slaveholding power has never been so strong---has never seemed to be so invincible---has never so successfully hurled defiance at the Eternal and Just One---as at the present time; and yet never has it in reality been so weak; never has it been so filled with so many uncompromising assailants, never has it been so filled with doubt and consternation, never has it been so near its downfall, as at this moment." Garrison discusses the controversy between Nathaniel P. Rogers and John R. French and the involvement of the New Hampshire Anti-Slavery Society in the affair. Because of their hatred and "motives of terror or revenge" toward England, Irish Americans are in favor of supporting the South through the annexation of Texas.
