Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

Esther Sturge thanks Maria Weston Chapman for the Liberty Bell and other publications. Sturge says "it is with pleasure we see you are not in debt." Esther Sturge's friend Elizabeth Fry has been disabled for more than two years and at times is in great agony. Contrary to expectations, Elizabeth Fry is now better. She recounts the death of Mrs. Fry's son and other members of her family. Mrs. Fry is not likely to "be able to take her valuable station again." Mrs. Fry could not understand the conflicting accounts she received regarding American abolitionism. Sturge received "a sweet bright little note" from Thomas Clarkson, who is "rejoicing that the Gospel is now spreading in Africa." Sturge comments on the probable effect of the French on the good works done for the natives in Africa.
