Edition Notes

Holograph.

On page three, the signature has been cut off, and the author of this letter is unknown.

The writer is going to Dr. (George Barrell) Cheever's prayer meeting because she wishes to get away from "gay and cheerful sounds" on this solemn day. "God have mercy on this wretched country!" Encloses a letter received from a friend whom the writer is trying to "make a Garrisonian abolitionist." He has given liberally to the "Brown fund" that is being raised in the city, and the writer is handing $100 over to Maria W. Chapman to be appropriated as she deems best.
