Holograph, signed.
The salutation of this letter is to Miss Weston, presumably this is Caroline Weston. Elizabeth Rotch Arnold acknowledges Miss Weston's letter and recieving a copy of the Liberty Bell. Elizabeth R. Arnold has been appointed "the amanuensis in the autograph arrangement," and gives a list of autographs that she and two others are willing to buy at stated prices. She describes the lectures by Professor John P. Nichol on the moon and sun. Elizabeth R. Arnold's summer hobby has been the collection and arrangement of sea mosses. She praises the new minister, Mr. [John] Weiss, who is a "fine German scholar," and his wife. She gives news of neighbors. William J. Rotch is now a member of the Massachusetts legislative council. Elizabeth R. Arnold's cousin, Mary Rotch, is engaged to a lieutenant in the Navy. She mentions a new book by Agassiz entitled Systeme Glaciaire. [Nouvelles Etudes et Experiences sur les Glacieurs Actuels, by Louis Agassiz, was published in 1847. This title is Part I. of Systeme Glaciaire, and is probably the book referred to by the Elizabeth Rotch Arnold.]
