Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

This letter deals with John Anderson Collins's salary and expense account. "So disaffected was [James Sloan] Gibbons with my course, that I did not render my bill of expenses, which amounted to two hundred sixteen 14/100 dollars."

In the postscript, John Anderson Collins says: "My wants are great---My necessities are pressing. Collins continues with these lines, which he writes in pencil: "The Am[erican] Society owes me from 1000 to 1200$. The Mass. Society owes me about $475---I owe nearly 700$---I want only enough to pay my debts."
