Maria Weston Chapman describes the travels of Harriet Martineau in the United States from 1834-1836. In particular, she tells what Martineau studied. Her deafness increased her powers of observation. She includes a transcript of a letter from Mr. and Mrs. Gilman of Charleston, South Carolina, to Harriet Martineau's mother. A quotation from Martineau's journal describes an interview with Albert Gallatin. Martineau said: "Gallatin would have the president a cypher too ..." Martineau describes Niagara Falls and West Point. She marvels at the independence of young people in America. She says that Americans cannot understand Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice."
