Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

This is a rough draft of a letter, with corrections and deletions.

Maria Weston Chapman assures Martha V. Ball and Lucy M. Ball of her regret at "the painful position they were placed in by the wrong course of my friend Mrs. Southwick, in inviting them to my house as abolitionists ..." Constrained by a sense of duty, Maria W. Chapman rebuked Mrs. Southwick, and also told her that it was wrong to make the Misses Ball suffer by communicating the rebuke.
