Title and statement of responsibility supplied by cataloguer.

Entries in journal dated August 1757 to December 1765.

Written in a single hand; possibly compiled by Henry Fletcher, commanding officer of the 35th Regiment of Foot at that time or by one of the other approximately six officers who served with the regiment at that time, among which was Colin Campbell.

Journal comprising a narrative of the campaigns and feats of arms of the 35th Regiment (Royal Sussex); concentrates on the time period throughout the Seven Years' War; includes an account of the capitulation of the British forces at Fort William Henry in 1757, the siege and capture of Louisbourg in 1758, the French siege of Québec in 1760 and Montreal in 1761, skirmishes at Fort Ticonderoga, Saratoga, and Albany in 1761, a voyage to Martinique via Barbados in 1762, the siege and capture of Havana in 1762, a voyage to Saint Augustine Florida, Charleston, South Carolina, and Port Royal, Jamaica in 1763, and a voyage to Pensacola, Florida and a description of Mobile, Alabama [then part of West Florida], and other parts of West Florida, in 1765, and finally back again to England by way of Havana in 1765. Also includes a copy of a letter from General Webb to Colonel Munro dated August 4, 1757, and two anecdotes from 1759 and 1760 regarding Anglo-French battles fought outside Québec.

Illustrations are generally hand colored, in watercolor and pen, and all are signed "W.B." or "W.B. engineer". They include maps, five of which are folded, plans, views and illustrations of fish and birds [see contents note for titles]

Each illustration, map or plan appears only on the recto of the sheet, except for [Plans numbered 1-6 depicting part of the works out of which the French were driven by the English, under the command of Genl. Monckton, at Martinico, January 24th. 1762], the final three plates in the work, which are illustrated on recto and verso.

John Carter Brown Library copy imperfect: first portion of journal wanting; first extant page is dated: 1757 August. First extant leaf is a half leaf which is torn and damaged and repaired; this leaf has facsimile reproduction inserted in to prevent damage to the recto of the first leaf. Also possibly wanting a portion of the journal at the end. Some maps and leaves are torn and waterstained with some loss of text. Some maps and plans have been repaired. Right hand fold of [Map 11] "Part of the coast of West F[lorida]" is wanting. Folded [Map 5] "Plan of Quebec and heights of Abraham" [dated 1760], originally housed in the journal has been unfolded and removed; this map is wanting part of the right side of the sheet and both lower corners and has been repaired with acid free paper.

John Carter Brown Library copy has sheets bound into a notebook consisting mainly of single quarter sheets which were sewn before writing.

John Carter Brown Library copy has remnants of paper spine and is interleaved with 51 leaves of grey blue paper.

John Carter Brown Library copy contains notes, correspondance and a transcription of the journal in the JCB bibliographical file.
