German-born art historian Rudolf Wittkower (1901-1971) and interior designer Margot Wittkower, née Holzmann (1902-1995), were married in 1923. The couple, both Jewish, fled Nazi Germany in 1933 for London, as Rudolf Wittkower was a British citizen through his British-born father, Henry. There Rudolf joined the staff of the Warburg Institute and Margot designed apartment interiors and furniture, specializing in neo-Palladian architecture. This style of architecture eventually became her expertise. As Margot was also an Italian Renaissance and Baroque specialist, the couple collaborated on the publications Born under Saturn (1963) and The divine Michelangelo (1964).
