Edition Notes

Title in red, remainder of t.p. text in black and red. Two-thirds of t.p. occupied by a woodcut of the entry of Charles V.

Date of publication from colophon.

Probably the first (and only?) ed. of a compilation which has been attributed in part to Andries de Smet whose name appears on fol. cxlb and cclxxxijb of the first part. One section, fol. lxxxiiijb-ccxxvb, is by Anthonis de Roovere. Both derive from works of the last quarter of the 15th century. Cf. Bib. Belgica.

"Vanden alder victorieusten en̄ onuerwinlijcsten Prinche Karolus Keyser vā Roomen, Coninck vā Spaengien ..." (60 leaves at end) has special t.p. with port. of Charles V as the king of Spain. Final 5 leaves "Die tafele."

"Het le gedeelte ongeveer tot fol. 84 is door Andries de Smeth uit andere kronijken overgenomen; van daar tot fol. 225 verso is van Anth. de Roovere en tot 1514 [sic] is van de Smeth. Het supplement is van onzekere hand."- Cf. Doorninck.

Black letter in two columns of 50 lines with running title Die Coronijcke van Vlaendren.

Woodcut ill., reused from various sources, by principally anonymous but recognizable artists, (cf. Murray, Conway, etc.) number ca. 200, some used more than once, and some combined to form a new ill., many within bold woodcut framing pieces. Initials.

In the second part, fol. xxxvii numbering is repeated. The folded leaf of plates constitutes L3 and 4 of that signature, but within the pagination is properly allotted one page no., xlv, although the no. does not appear on the leaf.

Signatures: [maltese cross], a-z, ,̉ A-Z, Aa-Bb,A-F⁶, G⁸, H⁴,J-L⁶. (Final capitals roman face)

Although the signature formula varies slightly from the description in Murray, Library's copy seems to coincide in description with that Meerman sale copy. Ownership inscriptions appear to be the same, some part lost in trimming at top of leaves.
