The plate at the front of vol. 1 was engraved by Edward Scriven from a potrait of Richardson by the English painter Mason Chamberlin.

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy is bound in full mottled and polished calfskin panelled in gilt. The turn-ins and board edges have been tooled in gilt and the spines are likewise panelled and tooled with red leather labels at their heads. All text block edges are stained yellow and sprinkled red. The pastedowns are of double-combed marbled paper.
