Play loosely based on the life and times of Philip Christoph von Ko nigsmarck, who was thought to have had an adulterous affair with the wife of the Elector of Hanover, who would later succeed to the throne of Britain as George I. After Ko nigsmark's disappearance, it was widely held that he had been murdered at the behest of the King.

The armorial bookplate of the Barton Library is present on the front pastedown and a multi-page manuscript summary is inscribed by G. Furman, Brooklyn, L.I. (possibly Garrit Furman, 1782-1848). This copy is bound together with one other work in a volume titled Hoadly and Montcreiff plays, which contains: [1]: The suspicious husband: a comedy as it is acted at the Theatre-Royal in Covent Garden -- [2]: Appius: a tragedy as it is acted at the Theatre-Royal in Covent Garden.
