Edition Notes

The Epitoma was a work begun by Georg von Peurbach at the request of Cardinal Bessarion. Regiomontanus continued the work after Peurbach's death, finally publishing his abridgement of Ptolemy in Venice in 1496 under the title: Epytoma Ioan[n]is de Mo[n]te Regio in Almagestu[m] Ptolomei.

Signatures: [A]œ́ B-Sœ́ Tı́ (first, unlettered gathering signed with Arabic numerals)

Title page in red and black ink with vignette (heraldic); initials.

A large woodcut emblem is present on T ́over a quote from Psalm 89: Beatus populis qui scit iubilationem.

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy bound in full, early calfskin delaminating in a manner commonly associated with sheepskin. The covers are panelled in double-ruled gilt with an unidentified armorial super-ex-libris on both. The embossed stamp of the Library is present on the title page and a small bookplate reading "Macmillan A. Rowes[?], Cambridge" is present on the front pastedown.
