Edition Notes

Pronounced in the Theological Auditorium of Leyden University, immediately after the funeral on 25 Jan. 1609. See p. [9].

Engraved title vignette (birds in flight). Engraved ports. of Joseph Juste Scaliger (p. [3] of preliminary sequence) and Giulio Cesare Scaliger (p. [99]). Four engravings shows Scaliger tombs in Verona.

With: Oratio funebris dicta honori & memoriae maximi virorum Iosephi Iusti Scaligeri / Dominique Baudius (Leiden : Elzevir & Cloucquius, 1609).

Binding: later vellum. Boards stamped in blind with double frame, crowns at corners of inner frame, central lozenge. Spine stamped in gilt; brief author & title on goatskin label. Page edges sprinkled red & blue.

Centered on front pastedown is armorial bookplate of Coronelli, engraved by F.J. Junod.

On the two front free endpapers are notes written in French and Latin discussing the Scaligers' reputation. The hand seem 19th c. but may be earlier, as bibliographical references at the end are to works no later than 1722.
