Edition Notes
Note: Marshall was born in Stirlingshire, studied in Glasgow, and served in the Navy before becoming an assistant surgeon in the Army, serving in South America, The Cape and in Ceylon. From an early period he took an interest in the medical statistics of the Army and he devoted his life to their study. The outcome was a considerable reform in the treatment of soldiers, especially in the tropics, which improved their condition and greatly increased the efficiency of the Army as a fighting force.
