The first ed., written in the form of a series of letters by White to Thomas Pennant and the Hon. Daines Barrington, revised by the author before publication.
"Advertisement" signed on p. v: Gil. White, Selborne, January 1st, 1788.
The plates were engraved by Peter Maxell and Daniel Lerpiniere.
The added t.p., and the special t.p. for "The antiquites of Selborne" (p. [307]), have engraved vignettes that are included in the plate count in White's List of plates on p. 12.
Signatures: pip2 sAp2 sB-3Pp4s.
Errors in paging: p. 292 is misnumbered 262; p. 398 is misnumbered as 389; pp. 441-442 have been omitted from the numbering with no loss of text. Also, in the signatures, 3P2 is misnumbered as 2P2.

CHMRB copy has an extra color-illustrated plate bound in facing p. 320, reproducing an "Adoration of the Virgin and Child" scene (presumably from the church at Selborne?); a printed citation ([1] p.) for this ed., excised from Ernest Dressel North's catalog of One hundred famous authors, is also laid in.
CHMRB copy has contemporary gilt-tooled full mottled leather binding with raised bands; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt; signed: Bound by Riviere and Son; housed in an archival paperboard box for preservation.
SCNHRB copy 39088010379667 has the added t.p. bound in after p. 1.
SCNHRB copy has later brown half-leather binding with marbled paper boards, raised bands, and gilt-tooled spine.
