Edition Notes

"A composite reprint, consisting of the Ord (1828-29) edition of Wilson's text, including Ord's biography of the author, and (vol. III, pp. 135-408) Bonaparte's American ornithology, 1825-33, vols. I-IV, with the prefaces to the first three volumes. A combined index is given at the close of the work .... Vol. I, pp i-xvi contains a 'Catalogue of North American birds' by Baird, reprinted from the 1859 8vo edition of the original matter first published in vol. IX of the 'Pacific railroad surveys' (reprint erroneously credited to Oc. 1858) ..." --J.T. Zimmer, Catalogue of the Edward E. Ayer ornithological library, page 686.

"The atlas of plates accompanying this edition is in 2 vols. folio, each separately entitled, and both titles are different from that of the vols. of text, so that they will doubtless yet be found quoted in catalogues as different works" --E. "Sketch of the author's life": volume 1, pages xi-cxxxii.

"Catalogue of North American birds" by Spencer F. Baird, originally issued by the Smithsonian Institution, 1858: volume 3, pages i-xvi.

"Caxton Press of Sherman & Co., Philadelphia; stereotyped by Mears & Dusenbery"--Verso of title page.

Volume 2 of the atlas has half-title: Bonaparte's Ornithology. Plates.

Plates illustrated by Wilson and engraved by A. Lawson; accompanied by blank guard sheets.
