Cataloged 2015 jmoschella
Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy is numbered three out of an edition of six and, prior to conservation in 2014, was the first of three printed items bound together in a volume titled, "The Barton Library, etc." In addition to numerous manuscript items bound-in at the end, this volume included [1] Sketch of Thomas P. Barton's Library -- [2]: Description of a copy of the first folio edition of the plays of William Shakespeare, now in the collection of T.P. Barton -- [3]: A visit to Montgomery Place.
Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy contains: a manuscript summary of the contents formerly bound together, in the hand of Thomas Pennant Barton, as well as a full-page inscription regarding Barton's participation in the publication of Wynne's book. Also present at front was a tipped-on, printed, single-sheet solicitation. This sheet is titled "The Barton Library" and is a call for funds, issued by the trustees of the Boston Public Library, in order to purchase the collection of Thomas Pennant Barton. The sheet is dated May 17th, 1872 and is signed by all of the trustees, as well as James T. Fields and one other. Also included were numerous notes, in Barton's own hand, related to the items formerly bound together in the volume, as well as several pieces of correspondence from the English book dealer Thomas Rodd regarding the purchase and sale of Barton's copy of the First Folio. These manuscript items are now cataloged separately under call no. MS 7339 nos. 1-26.
