"The Canterbvry tales", "The romavnt of the rose", and "The story of Thebes" have sectional title pages, each within an ornamental border (McKerrow & Ferguson 75).

Another state of this issue is known, in which the title page reads "The workes . 1561". The title page and prologue to the Canterbury Tales in this state are printed on Áœ with no illustrations. In a variant, the Canterbury Tales title page and prologue is printed in quires [cross]́œ and Áþ, with illustrations.

Numerous errors in foliation.

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy bound in early (ca. 18th century) sprinkled calfskin panelled in double-ruled blind. The spine is ruled in blind with paper labels at the head and tail. The uppermost compartment has been replaced in brown morocco. All text block edges are red. The leather bookplates of Henry W. Poor, Alfred Nathan, and one unidentified owner (with the initials "M.A.L." inside an open book), along with the bookplate of the BPL Skinner Fund, are present on the verso of the front cover. The autograph of Edward Bolton, dated 1728, is present in the same location and on the title page. Early Marginalia is present throughout. The spine is partially backed in medieval manuscript waste. An auctioneer's description from the Henry E. Huntington duplicates sale of Dec., 1917, is housed with the volume.
