Society needs elders (as distinguished from leaders) to progress. A progressive society is not a “liberal” society but one that solves issues for its citizens so they can live a better life. Numerous examples of current societal issues are presented. These issues cannot be resolved by continuing to classifying them as liberal / conservative, democratic / republican, etc. as such labeling is First Half (FH) of life thinking. Resolutions can be obtained by approaching issues with Second Half (SH) or elder thinking. Elders do not automatically arise when reaching a certain age or retiring. Elders arise in two ways – natural development or individually elected. Current leaders perpetuate societal issues and have essentially stifled natural elder development. As unlikely as it may seem, the second way comes about when an individual who, after experiencing devastation by life’s events, is humbled and then chooses to undertake an unclear journey that will result in a refocusing of issues and their development as an elder. This book calls for individuals to make that election and tells how to do it.
