Ten-year-old Scout loves her mother: Joanie is pretty, optimistic and fun. But sometimes she wishes they could lead a more conventional life. Scout prefers her books in neat piles and her crayons lined up in rows, which doesn't exactly fit with Joanie's erratic lifestyle. When Joanie's deception over Scout's birth comes to light, they go on the run. They flee to a city tower block, to the coast and on to a fruit-picking farm, making friends and foes en route. Scout is clever and vulnerable, resourceful and anxious. She seeks order amid Joanie's warm chaos. She loves her mother deeply, but wishes they could settle in one place. But where - and to whom - does a child really belong?
