"In Mato Grosso the violent coronel politics typical of the Old Republic were aggravated by proximity of the international frontier, by continued gaucho migration to the south of the state, and by the Cuiabá oligarchy's control of state politics. In 1920s urbanization and arrival of the railroad shifted the economic center to Campo Grande, undercutting both the coroneis and Cuiabá, while in the 1930s the Estado Novo repressed free-lance violence. Relies heavily on oral tradition"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
