Families from the Highlands of Scotland began arriving in North Carolina in the 1730's. The first colony of Scottish Highlanders was the Argyll Colony in the Cape Fear valley who settled in 1739 near the current city of Fayetteville. By the start of the American Revolution, the estimated number of Scot Highlanders in North Carolina was 15,000. Angus was the son of Hugh McDonald who settled in southern Moore County, North Carolina in 1787.
