Edition Notes
Written to reject the doctrine of the Mesa da Consciência e Ordens, created by King John III of Portugal in 1532; it was used as one of the mechanisms used for the centralization of power made by the monarch, and was extinguished by the liberal regime in 1833. This work was confiscated by a royal order of 20 June, 1804, but the copies which had already been sold had circulated from hand to hand. Cf. Moraes.
