Edition Notes
Francisco Solano, a Spanish Franciscan, was sent to Peru in 1589 by King Philip II. He was beatified by Pope Clement X in 1675, and canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726. His feast is kept throughout the Franciscan Order July 24, except currently in the United States, where it is celebrated on July 14. He is the patron saint of Montilla, in Spain, in which the Parish Church of San Francisco Solano is built on the site of the house where he was born. He is also patron of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Peru.
"Recit du martyre d'onze religieux de l'ordre de S. François, & de huit autres personnes ecclesiastiques, qui souffrirent la mort à Gorcum pour la defense de la foy, l'an 1572. Extrait de l'histoire qu'en a composé Mr. Estius. docteur, premier professeur, & chancelier de l'Vniversité de Douay", p. 146-157, has separate caption title and recounts the martyrdom of eleven Franciscan priests and eight other Catholic divines who were martyred by Calvinists in the Low Countries. After enduring much suffering and abuse in the prison at Gorkum [now Gorinchem], from June 26-July, 1572, the martyrs were transferred to Brielle in the Netherlands. Though William of Orange requested that the priests not be harmed, they were all hanged on July 9. The martyrs were beatified on November 14, 1675, and their canonization on June 29, 1865.
