Edition Notes
Author's name from Barbier (and from portrait)
Originally published Amsterdam, 1770.
Edition in 3 volumes in quarto, with 19 books of text, 4 folded maps designed by Rigobert Bonne, 7 illustrated plates, 3 of them serving as frontispieces, and a portrait of Raynal in v.1.
According to various sources, the following persons provided substantial information and collaborated with Raynal in the writing of the text: Denis Diderot; Jean Pechméja; Paul Henri Dietrich Holbach; Paulze; J. Dutasta; and abbé Martin.
Authorship of book 19 (v.3: p. 453-583) sometimes exclusively assigned to Alexandre Deleyre; other sources state text partly written by Raynal and partly by Deleyre, while yet different sources report Deleyre as editor of book 19. This book is also known under the title: Tableau de l'Europe.
Vignette on title pages; vignette v.1 signed: C.P. Marillier inv.

John Carter Brown Library copy bound in contemporary sheep. In v.1, gathering ²a (p.[i]-iij, 2nd count; [1], 2nd count) bound following leaf a4 of gathering a, but catchwords on leaves a4 verso and ²a2 verso establish correct sequence as stated in the physical description area and in the signatures note. Also, gathering chi is bound at the end of v.3, following leaf 4O1 (p. 658) and preceding the blank leaf 4O2, and Feugère reports the same arrangement in the copy seen by him; however, the direction line on leaf chi1 recto clearly reads: Tome I., and hence this gathering is included in the physical description area (p. [i]-iv, 3rd count, at end of volume) and in the note on signatures as part of v.1.
John Carter Brown Library copy purchased from the Louisa D. Sharpe Mecalf Fund.
