Four of the essays in Volume 4, those on the Stennetts, John Gill, Benjamin Beddome, and John C. Ryland, originally appeared in Volume 1 of this series. They have been placed in Volume 4 for chronological order, with new Further Reading sections. A revised and expanded Volume 1 is in progress, which will include only seventeenth-century figures. - Publisher's note, p. vii.
