Edition Notes
Imprint from colophon.
Text printed in single column with interlinear glosses. The commentary is printed in smaller type in a 2nd column placed toward the margin and sometimes extending across the whole page beneath the column of text.
T.p. largely taken up by woodcut of a theatrical performance, incorporating the caption "THEATRVM" at foot and with the title proper placed above it. The woodcut is repeated on [a]6v. Each of the 6 plays is preceded by a full-page cut depicting the characters, some joined by lines that indicate connections of plot between them. Smaller cuts precede scenes. Nearly all of these are made up of separate blocks for characters, buildings, and trees, repeated as necessary (but cf. the single-block cut on i3v). The combinations of blocks differ slightly among extant copies.
Spaces for capitals, some with guide letters. Large ornamented capital on [a]6r.
"Therentii vita excerpta de dictis. D. F. Petrarcha": [a]6r.
Signatures: [a]⁶ b-c⁸ d-z⁶ A-E⁶ F⁸.
Errors in foliation: leaves CXXXI-CXXXIX omitted and CLII-CLVII repeated; VII, CXI, CXV misnumbered VIII, XI, XV.
Hain-Copinger, 15431*
Proctor, 473
Goff, T-94
BM 15th cent., I, 110 (IB.1437)
Getty copy lacks final blank leaf.
Binding: later greenish goatskin over bevelled wooden boards, tooled in blind on covers, edges and turn-ins. Author, publisher and date on spine in gilt. The edges gilt.
At head of front pastedown is label of Viscount Mersey, Bignor Park. At lower left corner of back pastedown is bookseller's label of William Salloch. Some initial capital letters in the first two plays have been written with ink in the spaces reserved for them, and the names of characters represented in cuts have been written in some of the scrolls that lack them.
