Robert Vansittart, titulaire entre 1930 et 1937 de la plus haute charge du Foreign Office, a lutté aux côtés de Churchill contre la politique d'apaisement vis-à-vis de l'Allemagne hitlérienne et a été démis de ses fonctions fin 1937 par le Premier ministre Chamberlain. L'Appeasement était soutenu moralement par une majorité d'acteurs de tous bords politiques, et par un pacifisme de masse. Vansittart, passant outre l'obligation de réserve, devint le propagandiste anti-allemand le plus influent du monde anglo-saxon.
