James Baker was born in 1828 or 1829 in Tennessee, the son of a slave woman and a Col. Baker. He escaped through the underground railroad in 1849. The author met Baker at the Union Literary Institute, Randolph County, Ind., and heard his story. Baker later returned to the South to attempt to guide his family to the North.
