"In October 1971 the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that the prize for that year would go to Chancellor Willy Brandt of the Federal Republic of Germany for initiating a policy of reconciliation with Germany's wartime enemies of Eastern Europe, "in the name of the German people", through the treaties he had negotiated with the Soviet Union and Poland."
