Work Description
We Want Jobs! uses the experiences of an unemployed steel worker and his family in Pittsburgh to describe the events of the economic depression that gripped America from 1929 through 1933.
In Pittsburgh, steelworker John Waskowitz and his family were already suffering from the effects of the Great Depression like millions of others in 1929. As factories cut back on work days or closed altogether, many people found themselves jobless. Despair grips the nation. John was so desperate for work that he walked ten miles out of town, only to find factory after factory along his route shut down. Many give up, John, with scores of other unemployed Americans, begins the call for government action.
