Concerning the pronouncement of excommunication of political insurgents; the fiscal appeared before the Tribunal of the Inquisition in Lima and asked for those rebels to be punished to the full extent. The rebels are probably the comuneros in Paraguay, who revolted against the Spanish authorities from 1721-1725 and 1730-1735 because of the strong anti-Jesuit feelings among the Paraguayans and dislike for any governor seen as favoring the Jesuits. The comuneros were equated in the same category as Protestants, Jews, and Muslims according to the Catholic Church.
