Central to the concept of "Learning from the Literati" was the idea that the past is not something which should be quaintly relegated to museums or costume dramas, but a lens through which we should experience our contemporary lives, based upon the literati, China's scholar painters, who were keenly aware of this and lived thier lives with one foot in the present and the other in the past.
