"Early in 1947, the nuclear-force meson predicted by H. Yukawa in 1935-known to us today as the pion, with mass about 140 MeV-was discovered by C.F. Powell and his group at Bristol [1], using an early borax-loaded photographic emulsion which been exposed to the cosmic radiation, some of it at altitude 2900m on Pic du Midi (France) and some at altitude 5500m on Mt. Chacaltaya (Bolivia), the latter being prolific in yield."
