Nathaniel P. Tallmadge papers, 1812-1862

Correspondence, memoranda and drafts of Tallmadge's speeches, and clippings from Washington and New York State newspapers. Correspondence relates mainly to political matters, including Tallmadge's support of the United States Bank, enforcement of claims against France, 1834-1835, political appointments, his New York business interests, and his experiments in spiritualism. Letters of James D. Doty from 1841 to Tallmadge's appointment as Governor of Wisconsin Territory in 1844 concern land speculation, patronage, and politics.
