Wuthering Heights And over 60 selected poems by the author

That Wuthering Heights should have sprung from the pen of a young woman in her twenties exhibits an imagination and under- standing of people and of life nothing less than staggering. Yet this pulsating story of a magnificent passion between a man and his adopted sister was wrought in the hush of a remote moorland vicarage in Victorian England.

Like Emily Bronte herself her two tempestuous characters, Heathcliff and Cathy, belong to the wild, uncompromising moor. Their love, consuming and regardless, blossoms in the elemental places.

It is a love that transcends death, for it is not until Cathy dies that the full force of their indestructible passion declares itself . twisting the destinies of the living: even sapping Heath- cliff's cry for revenge. It is a love begun in childhood, with Heathcliff a foundling learning life and growing up with Cathy under the Earnshaw roof. It is a love which the interval of the years and the marriage of Cathy to another man cannot deflect in its wild, possessive course: yet it is a love of a ' terrible, flame- like, cleansing purity'.

Work Description

Marooned overnight in a lonely home on the Yorkshire moors, the effete Lockwood dreams of a wraith locked out in the snow. Gradually he learns the violent history of the house's owner, the fierce, saturnine Heathcliff and the thwarted love that has led him to exact terrible revenge on the two families that have sought to oppose him.

Since its original publication in 1847, Emily Bronte's only novel, whether repelling, captivating or intriguing different generations of readers, has never relaxed its powerful grip on the public, and the figure of the haunted, brutal Heathcliff has become part of Britain's cultural mythology.

This edition also includes over sixty of Emily Bronte's poems, an introduction, notes, text summary, selected criticism and a chronology of Emily Bronte's life and times.
