The history of Munich began in 1156 with what would probably be referred to nowadays as a terrorist attack: Henry the Lion gave the order for the destruction of the Oberfohring Bridge over the River Isar, the property of the Bishop of Freising, and built a new crossing place, which he named Ze den Munichen, or 'by the monks', after a small monastic community on his territory.
