Edition Notes

Preface signed by the editor, J. Ralph.

Adapted from Molière's "Monsieur de Pourceauqnac".

An alteration of the anonymous "Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, or, Squire Trelooby" published in 1704, soon after a translation by Vanbrugh, Congreve and Walsh had been acted, under title "Squire Trelooby". That published version was repudiated by Congreve as "none of ours". cf. Sir John Vanbrugh, ed. by W.C. Ward, v. 1, p. l-lii.
