Peter Thol's work represents an important but wayward contribution to representational painting in our time. The playfully arranged objects in the pictures of this Berlin painter, who was born in 1955, often show moments of instability and balance, but also simply show the desire to create a piece of art. This is particularly true of his landscapes. His painting is at once serious and playful. For instance, he paints a set of cutlery entirely in black and white which, when one look closer, turns out to be like a game of pick-up sticks. Can one lift the fork without moving the spoon? He paints a football that is without doubt a plaything, lying on a white line. However, this picture shows more. The ball could roll, and there is a line - the symbol of a rule of the game - that potentially turns the depicted event into a drama.
